The changing course of CIDP

CIDP is experienced differently over time – for some people, symptoms may gradually and steadily increase with time. For others, CIDP may follow a pattern of remission (when symptoms reduce or disappear for weeks or months) followed by relapse (when symptoms reappear).

During a relapse of CIDP, old symptoms may come back, or new symptoms may appear, and symptoms can then last for up to several months. Because CIDP can be so uncertain, it’s important to look after your mental health – speak to your doctor or family and friends if you need extra support during these difficult times.

Prioritising your physical and emotional health

Looking after your physical and mental health is important when living with CIDP. A healthy lifestyle can help to prevent other illnesses and infections that have been shown to trigger relapses and can generally improve your feeling of wellbeing.

Mental Health

Being diagnosed with a longterm, physically disabling condition can be very difficult to come to terms with. There may be times when you are frightened about the future; other times you may be frustrated with your symptoms and how they affect daily tasks. Be sure to ask for help if you need it. You may have close family and friends to support you, and your doctor can also refer you to a mental health service.

Diet
Diet

A nutritious and balanced diet helps make sure that you are getting all the vitamins and minerals you need. There is no evidence of any special dietary requirements for CIDP sufferers – however it is sensible to manage your weight to avoid putting excess weight on your muscles, which might cause strain and further disability.

Exercise
Exercise

Physical exercise can play a key role in the management of CIDP. Regular exercise can help improve your nerve and muscle strength. You can avoid fatigue or injury by choosing the right level of exercise and taking rest periods in between exercises. Your doctor and/or physiotherapist can help build you an exercise plan that suits your needs and abilities.
